San Andres Mine in La Unión
The San Andres open pit gold mine in western Honduras. The mining project has been heavily criticized due to two serious cyanide spills along the Lara River. The environmental disasters occurred on January 5, 2002, and on March 20, 2009, causing thousands of fish to die immediately on a river used often by numerous human communities for bathing and washing clothes. Yamana Gold sold the project on June 2009 to the also Canadian mining company Aura Gold. The local subsidiary is Minerales de Occidente (Minosa).
