La Puya Mining Resistance

Lorenzo Catalan, 80, from La Choleña, takes a break by looking at a book. "I can not read, but I enjoy looking at the photos of these animals while I'm here on duty. The 24 hours shifts from 5 PM to 5 PM are long and unfortunately one does get bored at times." Since March 2nd, 2012, local neighbors from San José del Golfo and San Pedro Ayampuc have blocked the entrance to the EXMINGUA gold mine - owned by Kappes, Cassiday & Assocaites (KCA) based in Reno, Nevada, USA. Residents from the communities claim the industrial activity in their territories as illegal since they were not appropriately consulted before the mine began operating. La Puya, San Pedro Ayampuc, Guatemala. May 14, 2013.
