La Puya Mining Resistance

Local leader Yolanda Oqueli speaks with her two-year old daughter Jimena at home. Yoli Oqueli suffered a murder attempt on June 13, 2012, due to her involvement with the anti-mining movement. The bullet is still lodged in her back. Since March 2nd, 2012, local neighbors from San José del Golfo and San Pedro Ayampuc have blocked the entrance to the EXMINGUA gold mine - owned by Kappes, Cassiday & Assocaites (KCA) based in Reno, Nevada, USA. Residents from the communities claim the industrial activity in their territories as illegal since they were not appropriately consulted before the mine began operating. La Puya, San Pedro Ayampuc, Guatemala. May 14, 2013.
