On July 7th, 2010, Diodora Hernandez (left), a staunch anti-mining activist, was shot point-blank on the right eye outside her home in the small community of San José Nueva Esperanza, only a few meters from a fence that delimits Goldcorp’s Marlin Mine. One year after her miraculous recuperation, Diodora, pictured with her granddaughter Olga and daughter Maria, continues to reject offers to sell her plot of land, the reason, she claims, for which she suffered the assassination attempt. The operations of Goldcorp's Marlin Gold Mine in Guatemala's western highlands has caused serious internal conflicts within the local Mam Mayan communities.
