Mariano Peña, 73, longtime resident of Carrizalillo, walks out of his home which also serves as a warehouse for a local store. A town with communal land titles and a population of roughly 1,000, Carrizalillo rents its lands to Goldcorp for the operations of Los Filos open pit gold mine. Mr. Peña rejects the arrival of the industrial project: "Life before the mine was more peaceful. We would grow corn, squash and mezcal. Sure, more money has come in to town. But it has seriously harmed our community. The mining company is not the only one to have arrived. The mafia is here now as well." Goldcorp's Los Filos open pit gold mine.
