Oscar Morales, vice-president for the Committee in charge of the Community Consultation with regards to mining activity in San Rafael Las Flores, Guatemala, recalls numerous social conflicts that have arisen since the Escobal, or San Rafael, mining project arrived. The San Rafael Mine, 60% owned by US-based Tahoe Resources and 40% by Canadian mining giant Goldcorp, has been operating since 2011 without having previously consulted the local residents - a violation to numerous international conventions.
