María Catalina Pérez Hernández, one of the so-called Agel Eight charged by Goldcorp of causing a short circuit that interrupted the Marlin gold mine's operations on June 2008, sits outside the Perez household in the Hamlet of Agel. Since 2004, the operations of Goldcorp's Marlin Gold Mine in Guatemala's western highlands has caused serious internal conflicts within the local Mayan communities in San Miguel Ixtahuacán and Sipacapa.
