Oscar Morales, vice-president for the Committee in charge of the Community Consultation with regards to mining activity in San Rafael Las Flores, Guatemala, overlooks the Laguna de Ayarza, a volcanic lake, that sits 2.5 Kilometers downstream from Tahoe Resources' El Escobal, or San Rafael, silver mine. According to the local Committee in the Defense of Life, the lake runs the risk of contamination due to the company's industrial mining activities in San Rafael Las Flores. The Escobal mine, 60% owned by US-based Tahoe Resources and 40% by Canadian mining giant Goldcorp, has been operating since 2011 without having previously consulted the local residents - a violation to numerous international conventions.
